Part 1

An interactive activity: Finding My Way to Mongkok
Learners go through the instructions for telling directions and find the place in the end. They learn to follow directions by reading the sentences in sequence and to identify the key words to extract meaning. They also learn to understand prepositions / prepositional phrases e.g. walk along, walk past and adverbials e.g. turn left, take the first turn to the right to show directions. Teachers may have to pre-teach these words before doing the activity.

Task
Aida, your friend from Malaysia, wants to buy a digital camera from a shop in Mongkok. She has downloaded a map and some instructions from the computer. She asks you to help her find the way.

Learners go through the instructions for telling directions and find the place in the end by drawing the route. They learn to follow directions by reading the sentences in sequence and to identify the key words to extract meaning. They also learn to understand prepositions / prepositional phrases e.g. walk along, walk past, and adverbials e.g. turn left, take the third turn to the right to show directions. Teachers may have to pre-teach these words before doing the activity. In the end, learners use the feedback sheet to evaluate how they have performed in the activities. Teachers need to explain to them the qualities that are needed.

You want to buy some CDs on Hip Hop dance music from a shop in Mongkok. You have downloaded a map and some instructions from the computer. Find the shop by drawing the route on the map and mark the shop with an 'X'.
