Learning Unit | Description |
---|---|
Travelling around Hong Kong | Learners learn two reading skills in this package: identify main ideas and some supporting details explicitly stated in the text and work out the meaning of words and phrases by using the semantic and syntactic clues. Learners also learn some vocabulary items related to hiking. |
The myth about healthy food | An analytical approach is adopted in this task. Learners are guided to read materials stimulating new thoughts and looking at issues from a different perspective, such as milk being not as healthy as we think. In the process from reading to writing, learners recap and apply the target language (e.g. nutrient names, modal verbs, phrasal verbs, connectives and comparatives) through online videos, games, group activities and analysing passages. The reading part paves the way for the writing task in which learners are required to produce argumentative articles. |
Preparation for a camping trip 1 | This package consists of an assessment task, some PowerPoint slides and a reflection form. There is a need to align teaching objectives with the question intent of the assessment. In other words, the assessment task should be incorporated into the learning and teaching cycle to promote assessment for learning and assessment as learning. The PowerPoint slides contain two main parts, for feedforward and feedback purposes respectively. The feedforward part draws learners’ attention to the text features of menus while the feedback part reminds learners of the possible reading strategies to be used. In the part for providing feedback, learners not only recap strategies they have learned in reading but also apply strategies in a new context. Learners are also guided to reflect on the strategies used by completing the reflection form. Last but not least, learners are encouraged to re-attempt the assessment task or revisit the feedback PowerPoint slides in order to familiarise themselves with the target strategies. |
News | By reading some newspaper articles, learners learn the text structure, features and related vocabulary. To consolidate their learning, they co-construct a newspaper article in groups. |
Study Tour to Australia | Learners are engaged in reading tasks and language activities related to weather and activities in five Australian cities in preparation for writing a blog on places. |
Food Culture | Through reading texts as well as completing vocabulary and language activities, learners learn about food cultures in different countries and write a magazine article about Indian food. |
Hobbies – Making things is fun | Learners learn vocabulary related to tools and materials. They learn sequencing words by reading instructions and other language focuses like imperative sentences to give commands/instructions. |
Hobbies – Be Creative | Learners learn the vocabulary items on inventions. By reading a magazine article, learners learn the text structure, features and related vocabulary. To consolidate their learning, they deconstruct and co-construct an article in groups. |
Healthy Eating | Learners learn food items and are taught to predict the flow and meaning of the text. They also get to know more about “countable and uncountable nouns” and “quantifiers” through different class activities. The target language is used to carry out everyday conversation. |
A Balanced Diet | Learners learn different types of food and food groups. They also get to know more about prediction skills on predicting contents. Learners learn the structure and features of a magazine article by deconstruction and reconstruction and proceed to independent writing at last. |
